JJJ Investing Services Website is Now ADA Accessible!
Along with the investing trends that have changed over the years, there are changes with the people who are looking for educational information on investing. There are even more changes with the technologies we use to gain that investing education.
A lot of clients and subscribers of JJJ Investing Services are like the owner, Jeff Weber - they are senior citizens in the USA. (If you are an investor in another country or a younger person, don't worry or feel left out - we help many people like you too!)
The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed by the US Congress in 1990. It requires businesses and facilities to accommodate people who don't have full use of their vision, hearing, or mobility. Common and popular changes are ramps for wheelchairs, wheelchair-accessible restrooms, audible crosswalk signals, and braille on elevator buttons and door signs.
As people in the Baby Boomer generation grow older, continuing a productive and happy life often means continuing to use the web and internet. But this becomes difficult for people whose eyesight, hearing, and manual dexterity (using a keyboard and mouse) have become difficult or impossible due to their age.
This is a key reason why ADA compliance for websites is increasingly important - especially websites for retirement investing that are ADA compliant!
Websites didn't exist in 1990 when the ADA was passed. Since so much more of life and business is being conducted online, there is growing demand and value (and legal pressure) to incorporate ADA principles into websites.
Here at JJJ Investing Services, we are committed to make our valuable investing education available to as many people as possible. We have added functionality and our ADA policy to our website to make it easier for sight or hearing impaired website visitors to access this information. Our target is AA compliance with ADA requirements (a very high rating), and we have done what we can with current technology and will continue to improve as technology improves.
Look in the top left corner of this JJJ Investing Services website and you will now see an orange wheelchair icon. It looks like this:
NOTE: If you do not see this symbol, it probably means you are viewing the website on a phone or tablet or browser that does not support these ADA accessibility tools. We recommend you try another computer (a desktop or laptop). If you still don't see the wheelchair icon please contact us so we can investigate further with you.
This wheelchair symbol is your entry point for several new capabilities that you can drive yourself for ADA compliance and ADA accessibility. Click the wheelchair icon and a visual menu list will appear. An image of this menu is below.
Keep scrolling down and we will explain each of these website ADA compliance capabilities and benefits to you.
Let's go through each ADA website accessibility settings item one at a time.
TTS is Text To Speech for ADA accessibility. If you have trouble reading text on a page (or simply prefer to listen to a person's voice) you can use TTS to have website text read to you. It's like your very own reading companion in the room with you!
The Display option for ADA accessibility gives you three (3) different color palettes and settings beyond the default settings for the webpage you are viewing. For people who are color blind, who need greater contrast between black and white, or who prefer reading lighter text on a black background, you can easily cycle through all of those options with this button.
The Magnify option for ADA accessibility cycles through 3 levels of increasing magnification of the page you are viewing. Zoom in until you can see more easily!
The Text Spacing tool for ADA accessibility cycles through 3 levels of increasing horizontal space between every letter. If words are too difficult for you to read because the letters are too close to each other, this is the tool to make your life easier on our website.
The Highlight Links function for ADA accessibility instantly creates a prominent black box around every hyperlink on a web page. If normal hyperlink clues (underlines, blue color, yellow color, or sometimes nothing visual at all) then this button will save you a lot of time and frustration.
The Cursor option for ADA accessibility gives you two more options for the size and shape of your cursor. Both options make it a larger than normal pointer arrow in most situations. When the cursor moves over a link it becomes a large hand. The first option is white cursors. The second option is a black version of these shapes. Try it out - you may find it's your new favorite cursor all the time.
The Readable Font option for ADA accessibility converts whatever font is on the webpage to another one that has been specially selected for greater accessibility, readability, and clarity through ADA guidelines. This includes people who may suffer from dyslexia. Give this a try too and ask yourself if you prefer the Readable Font option.
The Headlines Tool for ADA accessibility does something similar to the Hyperlink Tool. Any header on a webpage (defined by a unique HTML code) immediately has a prominent black box around it to make it pop out on the page for you. If you lose track of which section you are in for a long article or you want to know the major sections of an article this is a great tool for you.
The ADA Accessibility Policy is a required statement for any website that is ADA compliant. It explains what we are doing to comply with ADA regulations, compliance, and accessibility for every one of our website visitors.
Even though Jeff Weber and JJJ Investing Services is the longest-running resource still in operation to help others with AIM investing (our monthly investing newsletter has been published for over 27 years as of 2020!), we are committed to staying current with essential modern technologies.
Now you know what capabilities and content an ADA compliant website needs to have and why ADA compliance is important for website visitors.
But there's one more very costly factor (potentially) related to website ADA accessibility.
There is an important legal and financial reason for business and commercial websites to be ADA accessible and compliant. You see, there are some attorneys and law firms that are using the American with Disabilities Act regulation to sue companies with websites that are not ADA compliant.
These lawyers (probably) are not even representing someone who was actually harmed by a website being out of compliance with ADA regulations. But what does that matter - it still becomes a huge headache and legal expense for the website owner who has to deal with them!
For this reason alone, as a company or business owner with a website, making your website ADA compliant is a very smart and cost-effective "insurance policy" and risk mitigation to avoid any trouble from lawyers who are looking for easy targets.
If you happen to be someone with a business or commercial website wondering why and how to make your website ADA compliant, we are happy to recommend the company that worked with us to update our website and incorporate the ADA compliance package described in this article. That company is Summit Business Marketing which is based in Folsom, California. We have found them to be the highest value option for our website development needs and goals, and they have an incredible breadth and depth of capabilities - and amazing customer service - that they bring to every project.
